THOMAS AUSTIN - A realtor who loves his work. Originally from Spartanburg, SC, Tommy first visited Hilton Head Island in 1964. After being in the retail/wholesale ladies ready-to-wear business for over 20 years, Tommy and his wife moved to the Island 20 years ago and have called Hilton Head their home ever since.

Tommy married Elayne Karsman from Savannah, GA. They have one daughter, Harriet, who is married to a naval doctor stationed in Jacksonville FL. It is fortunate that they are so close as Tommy and Elayne get to visit their SIX grandchildren often.

When not selling real estate, Tommy is at work in his garden. His hobby is not only enjoyed by his family, but by people all over the Island who frequently drive by his home to see his creations in the yard.

ABOUT HILTON HEAD ISLAND:

Hilton Head Island holds a special place in the hearts of people around the globe. Located off the southernmost point of South Carolina and warmed year-round by the Gulf Stream, Hilton Head Island must have been created for relaxation and rejuvenation. Its forty-two square miles are lapped by the gentle waters of the Atlantic, edged with breathtaking ivory beaches and surrounded by fertile salt marshes of spartina grass.

Everything under the sun and then some ..... the Island offers a network of paved fitness trails that wind for mile after mile, ready for biking, jogging or rollerblading. We have watersports from angling to surfing, not to mention flying high with parasailing, or diving deep with the Island Scuba Club. And then there's sailing, waterskiing, kayaking and sightseeing cruises around the Island or the two neighboring towns, Savannah and Beaufort.

Just because Hilton Head Island is a resort island where people come to kick back and relax, doesn't mean life is all sand, sea and suntan oil. The arts are also very much alive and thriving, from private galleries and small recitals to the gala presentations at the Self Family Arts Center, one of the only regional arts facilities in the nation to bring both the visual and performing arts together under one roof.

Fans of the visual arts will find galleries from one end of the Island to the other, including the Hilton Head Art League's Gallery in Sea Pines. And lest music lovers feel left out, you can enjoy everything from a symphony orchestra to jazz to blues - year-round. Don't miss the Hilton Head Orchestra's International Piano competition in February. It's the Southeast's only international piano competition.

No matter what you're hungry for, Hilton Head Island perfectly suits every taste. Bistros, outdoor cafes and over 200 wonderfully diverse restaurants are only a few of our sparkling diversions. Restaurants featuring every type of cuisine are sure to add some spice to your life with a variety of prices perfect for every traveler's budget. Try our signature Lowcountry boil brimming with seafood fresh from our docks, or an elegant candlelit dinner overlooking one of our yacht harbors.

And, finally, Hilton Head Island has long been the destination of choice for golfers the world over. Our temperate climate allows novice and pro alike to indulge their game year-round, playing a round or watching the tournament action. The greatest names in golf are here--Pete Dye, Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Arthur Hills, Tom and George Fazio, and Island resident, Clyde Johnston.

Whether professionals or designers, the best in the game have always graced our area courses -- more than 40 at last count.
